ESSENCE OF SCHOOL MATHEMATICS AND STUDENT LIKE TO LEARN MATHEMATICS

To be student think much of mathematics hence according to ( Ebbut and Straker, 1995 ) teacher not properly use mathematics definition of axiom, but define mathematics as school mathematics. Following is school mathematics essence according to them :

1. Mathematics represent activity of relation and pattern observation
- giving opportunity for student to do activity of invention and investigation of pattern to determine relation
- giving opportunity for student to do attempt variously
- pushing student to find the existence of sequence, difference, comparison, subdiving, etc
- pushing student concludes public
- assisting student comprehend and find relation among congeniality one with is other

2. Mathematics is creativity needing imagination, invention, and intuition
- pushing initiative and give opportunity think to differ
- pushing to feel want to know, desire enquire, ability expostulate, and ability estimate
- esteeming invention which outside estimate as useful matter from assuming it as mistake
- pushing student find the structure and design of mathematics
- pushing student esteem invention of the other student
- pushing student think reflection
- not suggest usage a certain method

3. Mathematics is activity of problem solving
- providing environment learn mathematics which stimulating incidence of mathematics problem
- assisting student to solve problem of mathematics use its own way
- assisting student knows needed to solving mathematics problem
- pushing student to think logically, consistence, systematic, and develop documentation/note system
- developing ability and skilled to think out
- to assisting student know how and when use various physic appliance/media education of mathematics, such as : meter, calculator, etc

4. Mathematics represent appliance communicate
- pushing student recognizes the nature of mathematics
- pushing student make example of mathematics nature
- pushing student explains the nature of mathematics
- pushing student gives the reason of the importance of activity of mathematics
- pushing student discuss problem of mathematics
- pushing student read and writes mathematics
- esteeming student mother tongue in discussing mathematics
